Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I choose you over all the other lawyers and firms available?
If you are interested in competent legal service, at a reasonable price, then you have found what you seek (See our Mission and Policy statement page). Our business is structured so that it depends on client satisfaction to be profitable. After an initial consultation, we may determine that we cannot provide what you need. If that happens, we will tell you why we came to that conclusion and provide you with referrals elsewhere, if you so request.
How do I know if I need a lawyer?
There are some simple legal tasks that a person can do for themselves, with just a little guidance from an attorney. One example would be if you have a minor case that is appropriate for small claims court. Another might be a simple referral to government agency. That is one purpose of the free initial consultation.
How are legal fees determined?
This is another purpose
of the initial consultation. The type of fee structure depends on the
case. In some cases, a flat fee can be quoted that will cover all services
for your case. Some examples where a flat fee can be quoted are simple
bankruptcies and dissolution of marriage. There are other cases where a flat
fee can be quoted.
In some cases, the amount of total attorney time cannot be
estimated, and a flat fee cannot be quoted. Some examples are contested
divorce, civil lawsuits and in court litigation, among others. These cases
are taken on an hourly basis of $125 per hour, usually with an initial
retainer. For example, if your case is taken on an hourly basis with an
initial retainer of $500, that $500 pays for your first four hours of attorney
time. You are billed on a regular basis and kept fully informed of time
spent by detailed billing.
There are cases which can be taken on a contingent fee
basis. That is a situation which will end with a lump sum money award or
settlement. These cases are taken based on a percentage of the final
amount received, usually 33.3% or one-third. Some examples of these types
of cases are auto accidents or collection, among others.
Can there be other costs in addition to attorney fees in a case?
Yes, there can. Some examples are hiring of expert witnesses, obtaining medical records and medical reports and the cost of court reporters for taking depositions. Again, these costs can be discussed and a better idea of exactly what extra services will be needed can be determined during the initial consultation.
Is the free initial consultation confidential?
Absolutely. The only people who will see that information will be the attorneys and professionals who will assess your case and only for the purpose of assessing your case. Your name, e-mail address, and any other information given to us will not be revealed or disclosed to any other parties without your specific written permission.
